Sherry Arnold and Lauren Spierer: 2 missing women cases, 2 'body found' tweets

Two women--Lauren Spierer and Sherry Arnold--are currently missing and have drawn media and twitter speculation earlier this week about their bodies being found. In the Sherry Arnold case, USA Today reported that as of Sat., Jan. 14, 2012 one man is in custody and another is being questioned in her disappearance.

But while it has also been reported that Sherry Arnold is dead, both reports of a body being found for each woman was denied earlier in the week (and still is in the Spierer case).

On Thursday, the following two tweets were sent regarding Lauren Spierer:

"They found Lauren Spierer in Brown County. 50 yr old buried her & turned himself in," one tweet said.

"Lauren Spierer found!" another tweet said.

The Indy Channel, however, reported that the Bloomington Police Department's Capt. Joe Qualters denied the tweet rumors. Qualters issued his own statement to set the record straight after first contacting the law enforcement agency in Brown County, in order to substantiate they had not found Spierer's body unbeknownst to him. "Investigators from the Bloomington Police Department have made contact with law enforcement officials in Brown County who confirm that they are not working anything related to the information being posted."

Sherry Arnold dead, was Arnold body found?

The Bismarck Tribune's headline article title on Sat. Jan. 14 read "Law Enforcement Saying Little in Sherry Arnold Case," but credited the Sidney Mayor, Brett Smelser, as saying that,

"The news is not good, and as far as I know we don't have a body yet."

But on a Find Sherry Arnold Facebook page earlier this week, a comment was posted that her body had been found. And some news agencies have reported as much in the past few hours, like Keloland Television, which said,

"Her body was found Friday."

The Bismarck Tribune reported that Richland County Sheriff Frank DiFonzo, while sparse with his words on the investigation, did state that "As the result of a tip, we're able to announce that a significant breakthrough has been made [in the case]"

The breakthrough, according to DiFonzo, was the arrest Thursday night of a 47-year-old man in the disappearance of Arnold. Law enforcement officials also confirmed with the Sidney School District that Sherry Arnold was dead, prompting the district school superintendent Daniel Farr to confirm that "the notification came to the school at 9:30 a.m."

So while reports have been made that Sherry Arnold is dead and two men have been questioned, there has been no update on the body of Sherry Arnold as of 5:30 a.m. on Sat., Jan. 14, 2012. And Lauren Spierer remains a missing person case, with all alleged body findings in that case denied.
