A saga that was built up prior to last January's NFC Championship game just got larger.
Seattle Seahawks All-Pro CB Richard Sherman had some fighting words for San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree on the debut episode of American Muscle on the Discovery Channel. Almost six months after the initial rant where he called Crabtree a "sorry" receiver, Sherman had more to say.
“It’s much more of just I don’t like the dude,” Sherman says in the episode of American Muscle. “You know what I’m saying. And I think he’s sorry. So it’s really what it comes down to.”
Before the 2013 NFC Championship game started, Crabtree was asked if Sherman was the best cornerback in the NFL. Crabtree didn't admit this at the time and instead focused on the game itself.
"I don't know [anything] about the best cornerbacks in the league," Crabtree said in January. "I just know teams, you know. We are playing the Seattle Seahawks and hopefully we come out with a win. We are going hard."
With the 49ers inside the red zone with less than a minute to go in the fourth quarter, they were looking to take the lead with a touchdown as the Seahawks led by six points. Colin Kaepernick and the coaches agreed to throw into one on one coverage for Michael Crabtree as he was paired with Sherman on the right side.
On first down, the worst case scenario ended up happening with Sherman tipping the ball in the air while LB Malcolm Smith was there in support to intercept it, therefore ending the 49ers hopes of reaching the Super Bowl for the second straight year.
Sherman would go on to a famous tirade calling Crabtree a "sorry" receiver immediately after the game and then called him "mediocre" during his post-game presser.
The Seahawks won Super Bowl XLVIII two weeks later for their first championship in franchise history while the 49ers are only left with questions and silence.
There was also speculation that Crabtree was not willing to shake Sherman's hand at a charity event held by Larry Fitzgerald in the summer of 2013. There are conflicting reports, where it is uncertain on who started what.
Sherman continued to rant on the episode of American Muscle showing his displeasure for Crabtree. He said it's personal and not everyone will understand the feud.
“It’s just about him, it’s just about Crabtree,” Sherman said on the episode. “It’s not going to be something that goes away. I hope to play him every year for the rest of my career and choke him out. There’s not much else I can say about the subject. Nobody will understand it but him and me. That’s all that needs to understand.”
The 49ers will face the Seahawks for the first time in 2014 on Thanksgiving night, November 27.
