BBC announced on July 2, "The creators of Sherlock have confirmed the hit BBC One drama will be back for a special in 2015, followed by a fourth series of three episodes."

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman will begin filming a special in January that will be followed by the series later in 2015.

The announcement came after Martin Freeman apparently let the cat out of the bag, telling The Telegraph, “If that’s going to be a special - I’m speaking off-message here; if this was New Labour I’d get fired - I think that might be for next Christmas. A Christmas special. That’s what I understand.”

Freeman's real life wife, Amanda Abbington, will also return to play his wife, Mary.

Fans of the great detective will also be pleased to know that Sherlock Holmes 3 with Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law is rumored to be under development.

Jude Law told Screen Rant late last year, “I think [Warner Bros.] wants it, and there’s a lot of want from us as a team. We want it to be better than the other two. We want to make sure it’s smarter and cleverer, but in the same realm.”

Radar Online says that Robert Downey, Jr. is attempting to lure Jack Nicholson to appear in Sherlock Homes 3.

Fortunately, Richmond fans won't have to wait for either the BBC or the big screen.

This fall CAT Theatre opens their 51st Season with Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure by Stephen Dietz. This version is based on the original 1899 play by William Gillette and Arthur Conan Doyle.

CAT's production opens October 24.
