A deputy remained in jail Tuesday after being accused of sexually assaulting a female inmate at the Cobb County jail without her consent.
Sergeant Alvin Blake Sutherland, 51, was charged with violation of public oath, aggravated sodomy, aggravated sexual battery, and sexual assault by a law enforcement officer, according to the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation began Wednesday after a female inmate reported that she had been sexually assaulted by the deputy, the sheriff’s spokeswoman Ms. Nancy Bodiford said.
Two days later, Sgt. Sutherland was arrested and placed in the Douglas County jail where he was being held without bond for Cobb County.
Mr. Sutherland was also terminated after 10 years of service with the department, Ms. Bodiford said.
“This type of conduct is highly unacceptable under any circumstances but even more so when perpetrated by a law enforcement officer against someone he has been charged with protecting,” Sheriff Neil Warren said in a news release.
