The “person of interest” in the disappearance of a Deltona mother and her children made a suicide attempt Saturday morning, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office says it happened while 31-year old Luis Toledo was talking with Sheriff’s investigators Saturday, and had been allowed to use a restroom with a deputy guarding him. Volusia County Sheriff’s spokesperson Brandon Haught says Toledo, “…forced the doorway [to the restroom] shut, smashed the mirror and used the mirror shards [to cut himself].” Deputies quickly accessed the room, secured Toledo and determined that his injuries were non-life threatening. Toledo was then transported to and examined at Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach.
Toledo was arrested on a battery charge from Lake Mary Police Wednesday by Volusia County Sheriff’s Deputies making a welfare check at the home of 28-year old Yessenia Suarez and her two children in Deltona. The mother and children were reported missing by family Wednesday, after a domestic battery incident in Lake Mary Tuesday night. Volusia County Sheriff’s investigators said Thursday that the mother and children were believed to be deceased. One of Suarez’s cars was found at her Deltona home Wednesday, and the other car was found at a Publix in Lake Mary. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, have been searching for the bodies the past several days. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office asked residents on Friday to, “….be observant and immediately contact law enforcement if [you] see anything that appears suspicious” over the weekend.
