A n sheriff's deputy has said he is planning on adopting a dog he helped rescue Monday. The poor canine been stabbed multiple times then dragged into a wooded area to be left to die.
St. John's County Sheriff's deputy Dan Sorrell says he was dispatched to a home where a man's roomates were concerned. The roomates withnessed after seeing 28-year-old Randal Hart attack the dog. He followed a blood-trail until he spotted the dog. Hart was arrested and charged with animal cruelty. Officials say Hart relinquished ownership of the dog.
Sorrells says the dog had been stabbed in the side and her throat was slashed. She was taken to a veterinary hospital in Jacksonville and Sorrells says he plans to pay her medical bills and take her home.
The St John County Sheriff's Department reported on 1/14/2013:
"A 28-year old St. Johns County man was arrested on a charge of animal cruelty for allegedly cutting his dog’s throat Sunday evening. The suspect, identified as Randal B. Hart, 28, 8450 C.R. 13North, was booked into the county jail and will have a first appearance Tuesday morning.
Deputies along with county Animal Control responded to the suspect’s residence today at 10:20 a.m. when a witness contacted the Sheriff’s Office to report the incident that actually occurred Sunday night.
The witness stated that the suspect had allegedly stabbed the dog several times and cut its throat. The suspect then was seen dragging the howling dog to a nearby plot of land. The suspect was located at his residence this morning and secured without incident. It took the deputy and the Animal Control Officer about 45 minutes to locate the dog, a St. Bernard mix, in a grassy area near the home. The dog was still alive but in obvious distress.
The Animal Control Officer transported the dog to Atlantic Veterinarian Hospital for emergency surgery.
The suspect, who was transported to the St. Johns County Jail, told the deputy that he allegedly stabbed the dog because the dog bit a kitten and needed to be “put down.” The deputy also located the kitten and observed no injury to the kitten as it was in fact playing with another dog on the property."
At this writing Hart remains in jail with a $5,000 bail.
