It's been over a decade since the last Shenmue game was released by SEGA on the XBox. The story was far from wrapped up, and fans have been eagerly awaiting a sequel since then. Whether or not a third game will come out is still up in the air, but players are finally receiving a conclusion to the story if French gaming journalist Sebastien Abdelhamid is to be believed.
Translated on a NeoGAF forum post, Abdelhamid tweeted the good news. The big news is that Shenmue 3 is still being considered, and it may be released as an anime or manga. As someone who played Shenmue 2, this could actually be better than a third game.
The first game utilized Virtua Fighter elements in a RPG setting, but the second game dumbed down the combat while increasing the use of quick-time events. While searching for your father's killer in Hong Kong, you had to do actual detective work such as listening to all phone calls on a tapped line for forty-five minutes. The game had a lot of charm besides this. When you walked into an arcade, there was classic SEGA games to play such as Afterburner and Outrun. The game was fully voice acted which was, again, an amazing feat for the time.
It was an immersive gameplay experience, but it's clear as to why most people avoided the game. The first game was even released as a movie with all clips coming directly from the game; releasing the third as an anime may be a fitting end.
