One of the premier international dance companies, Shen Wei Dance Arts has won worldwide acclaim for its interdisciplinary cross-cultural performances, which have been described as “breathtaking, powerful, and riveting” (The Boston Globe). The work Shen Wei makes for his company draws on influences as varied as traditional Chinese culture and arts; European surrealism; American high modernism; and the ritual power of ancient drama. Celebrated for its “gorgeous visual imagery” (The London Times), the company’s dances reflect the compositional rigor of Shen Wei the visual artist—incorporating vivid colors, striking design, and imaginative use of space into theatrical, kinetic paintings.
The company today tours to over 30 countries and 130 cities, performing at festivals and venues like the Venice Biennal. They have been presented five times by the Lincoln Center Festival, had a five-year performance residency at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, and the first dance performance at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Shen Wei Dance Arts also earned the honor to perform at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Born in Hunan, China, Shen Wei started studying Chinese opera at nine-years-old, and soon became interested in dance. In 1991, he became the founding dancer and choreographer for the The Guangdong Modern Dance Company, the first modern dance company of China. After receiving a scholarship from Nikolais/Louis Dance Lab in 1995, he moved to New York City and in 2001, the Shen Wei Dance Arts was founded with performances of Near the Terrace at the American Dance Festival. Wei is invested in every aspect of his shows by taking on the choreography, stage direction, set, costume, lighting, and make-up designs, along with being a painter and filmmaker.
