Before you decide what kind of cat you want for a companion, do some research. Do you want a Calico cat, a Tabby, a Tortoiseshell or a solid colored cat with markings? Perhaps you don't care; it's rather exciting to keep an open mind and wait to see what appeals to you most.
And, appealed you will be. Cats are the most endearing creatures. If you are a first time owner, I would advise choosing a short haired feline. The proper name is Domestic Short Hair. These shed less than a long haired cat and don't require tedious combing out.
But! It all depends on what strikes your fancy. Research can make some choices easier for you if you are a first time cat owner. Have an idea of what peaks your interest before you head to a shelter. And, as previously mentioned, you will want to take more than one home with you; be prepared for this. It happens to most animal lovers every time they enter a shelter. Two cats can make great play mates, but not if you have never owned a cat before. Wait until you choose one and live with it for a time before you choose a second one.
