For the first time since the founding of Shelter Me Inc in 2007, our animal rescue organization has provided assistance to more dogs than cats. So far this year, we have subsidized the spay & neuter of 40 pitbulls and the rescue of 13 cats.
The pitbull numbers reflect the results of a $50 spay/neuter program we launched in the Brockton area back in October 2012. The Brockton Enterprise covered the program and helped us get the word out. We got about 10 calls right away and after the first couple weeks, the calls tapered off, but they never stopped coming. Every single week of this past year, we have received at least one call, sometimes more, but never less than one from someone who can’t afford to fix their pitbull at the full veterinary price which can run between $300 and $600.
We have gotten calls from pitbull owners in Easton, Fall River, Framingham, Hingham, Holbrook, Hudson, Lakeville, Middleboro, Raynam, Taunton and West Bridgewater. We’re focusing on the South Shore towns in Massachusetts because pitbulls have flooded shelters in these areas. We are fortunate to partner with Animal Rescue League of Boston, which parks their Spay Waggin’ in Brockton and provides low-cost spay & neuter (normally $150 per dog) that we subsidize at $100 per dog. So, the owner only has to pay the Waggin’ $50.
We ask the pitbull owners to send us a picture of their dogs and we put together a slideshow to share with you. These are great looking dogs and wonderful pictures but our favorite is definitely the photo of the pitbull who adopted the baby bunnies. If you live in the South Shore and would like to get your pitbull fixed for $50, you can apply to the Shelter Me Inc program by calling 617-549-8523.
