On Sept. 5, 2013, HLN confirmed that the wife of recently acquitted George Zimmerman has filed for divorce. Shellie Zimmerman’s attorney Kelly Sims explained that her client filed paperwork in Seminole County Court. The filing comes approximately one week after an ABC ‘Good Morning America’ interview where she indicated having marital problems.
When asked if she would stay with her husband, Zimmerman told ABC, “Of course I want to have children and stay married.” Upon further questioning; however, as to if she wanted to stay married to George specifically, she responded she wasn’t sure.
Shellie Zimmerman faithfully stood by her husband’s side throughout his first-degree, murder trial and perjured herself on the stand regarding the amount of donations the couple raised through an online, PayPal account for his defense. Zimmerman recently plead guilty to perjury charges and will serve one year probation and 100 hours of community service. George Zimmerman was not present during her court proceedings.
Discussing the perjury charge, Zimmerman stated, “I can rationalize a lot of reasons for why I was misleading, but the truth is I knew I was lying.”
George Zimmerman has recently been stopped for speeding twice, photographed at a Kel-Tec gun warehouse in Cocoa, Florida and is said to seek compensation from Florida for his legal expenses. He was acquitted for the Feb. 26, 2012, shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin on July 13, 2013.
