Texas rocker, Sheila Swift has just released her latest offering, a 3-song EP that provides a glimpse into the past 6 years of her, at times, turbulent life. The trinity of tracks entitled “The Striving Is Over” depicts a long journey, a gradual, empowering rise from dark to light.
The opener, “Stay,” rolls in like a dry wind across a vast and dusty plain. Swift’s scorching, breathy vocals enter gently but with a quiet intensity as the hollow twang of the guitar deftly mirrors the singer’s own emptiness. By the end of the track, however, instead of crumbling into acceptance, Sheila’s magnificently resolute vocals climb to a passionate and, ultimately, triumphant roar. “Each song is so painfully literal and so very raw,” Sheila revealed, “but not a single one is hard to sing! They are all empowering! By writing each one and being brave enough to release them, I was released! Every time I sing one of these songs, it further removes me from the past — the pain, the sadness — and my entire journey feels validated.”
Throughout the EP, when faced with adversity, Swift responds with strength, grace, and perseverance. Utilizing her dynamic voice and her fearless honesty, she becomes a beacon, a radiant light offering hope.
“The EP does unfold from dark to light. Just as life does,” Sheila acknowledged. “That is what it is all about! Where there is light there is hope. Where there is hope there is a willingness which leads to perseverance. And, when you are willing to persevere, there is a reward. The striving is finally over.”
