Have you heard the bleeting of sheep in Manhattan lately? Well how could you have missed the sheep and trees at Getty's Station?
Remember the old Getty Filling Station in West Chelsea on 10th Avenue? Well Michael Shvo and Paul Kasmin Gallery have purchased this site for $23.5 million and then they brought in gravel, sod, and then grass to place all over the property while leaving the building and the gas pumps in place! Yes that's right! The old gas pumps are still there amidst grass and dwarfish trees. Oh yes, and now a herd of bronze sheep grace the landscape. The sheep were created by the late surrealist sculptor, Francois-Xavier Lalanne. Lalanne's mission was to demystify art and then to also capture its joie de vivre, and so he created a surrealist pastoral landscape set among the industrial architecture of a gas station and pumps.
This old gas station called Getty's Filling Station is now Sheep Station and is an art gallery! Well it will still be formerly called Getty Station, only now it's an art gallery. I think only this could happen in New York!
Visionaries Paul Kasmin Gallery and real estate mogul Michael Shvo had a dream - well maybe a nightmare - no a dream - and then they put it in action and turned an old oily gas station into Manhattan's trendiest art gallery and possibly the trendiest on the planet! They are not exactly finished with this property, because they are planning on building luxury condos on top of all this! And maybe even more units on top of those if the city gives them air rights! There dream is a progressive one reaching to the skies, as all dreams do!
There will now be revolving art shows at this newly created art gallery in Chelsea at 239 10th Avenue. You will soon be able to see 25 iconic epoxy stone and bronze Moutons at Sheep Station. Surprisingly this will be the largest collection of art to be shown in public in an outdoor venue.
