Earlier this week, Manhattan chanteuse, Shayna Leigh, traveled down to Philadelphia with her manager and band for a special Sonicbids concert in the upstairs dinner theater at the World Café Live. Shayna’s performance was sandwiched between two of Philadelphia's favorite local songstresses, Katie Barbato and Dani Mari.
When it was her turn, Shayna stepped quietly onto the stage. Her sleek, black ensemble with a deep “V” cut top gave the performer a look of relaxed elegance while her chunky heels added a few inches to her presence. The large pair of gold hoop earrings brought the sparkle. Shayna Leigh had the air of a sophisticated, but down-to-earth, entertainer.
Backed by her capable band (Joel Arnow - drums, Ryan Bull - guitar, Jon Cornell - bass, and Julian Velard - keyboard), Shayna began her set with a sultry rendition of “Oh No Not My Baby.” The musicians were tight and quickly established a mellow, electric piano-driven groove that provided a swirling, atmospheric backdrop for the artist's delicate vocals.
Early in the set, the singer performed a Dusty Springfield-inspired version of the classic “How Can I Be Sure.” Shayna's voice strutted atop the jazzy, uptempo arrangement with a dynamic flair, sashaying from word to word.
Halfway through her show, the performer introduced, “Countdown,” a song that she and the band were still “experimenting with.” Lyrically, it was a solid piece of writing about refusing to live by the restraints of time. Musically, the vibe embraced a nostalgic, 70’s piano pop feel that exhibited shades of John Sebastian (Lovin' Spoonful), Randy Newman, and Harry Nilsson.
The New York-based songwriter followed “Countdown” with the bouncy, upbeat, hit-to-be “Next To Me,” which has already accumulated over 160,000 views/listens on YouTube. The band deftly captured the spirit of the song and delivered a bright-eyed, happy-go-lucky performance.
Shayna Leigh performs with the dazzling sparkle of a diamond caught in a brilliant light. Her vibrant presence is like a sweet champagne that both delights the senses and enlivens the evening. Her debut album, Tenderness, is due out on September 17th.
