Hikers in the Johnstown area have many options for enjoying our natural resources. There are many miles of state forest, state park, national park, and community parks to enjoy. Add to that the local rail trails and the options are there to keep you from getting board. One Johnstown area state parks is showcasing their trails this summer with a summer hiking series.
In an effort to promote DCNR's Get Outdoors PA initiative, Shawnee State Park in Schellsburg, Bedford County is having a Thursday evening hiking series at the park this year. The park located about 50 minutes from Johnstown will kick off the series this Thursday, May 23 with a hike along the 3.4 Lake Shore Trail. The hike begins at 6:00 p.m. and is a great way to get a jump on the Memorial Day Weekend.
The hikes this summer will take place every other week on Thursday nights. Most of the hikes will be starting at 6:00 p.m. except the hike scheduled for Thursday, July 4 which will begin at 5:00 p.m. All of the hikes are entirely free of cost and each hikes will highlight a different trail or hiking loop in the park. According to the State Parks Regional Outdoor Recreation Coordinator, “by the end of the series, anyone who has hiked each week will have hiked just about every foot of trail in the park.
The hikes are posted on the Pennsylvania State Parks website Calendar of Events. Just choose Shawnee State Park as the facility for an easy to view list of the hikes. Two hikes do require registration. These hikes will require transporting hikers to the starting point in the park, so plans must be made for these hikes. You can register for these two hikes online or by calling (814)733-2203. Those will be the hikes on June 20 and July 4.
Anyone who completes all of the hikes in the series will receive a memento of the accomplishment. For more information, contact the State Parks Southern Regional Outdoor Recreation Coordinator at (814)733-2203.
Have fun and enjoy the outdoors this summer at Shawnee State Park, Johnstown. Then stay to catch one of the great sunsets.
