Shaw sisters lead MDI to Eastern Maine championship game

BANGOR-- Hannah Shaw scored 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Mount Desert Island (MDI) Trojans to a 46-44 victory over Nokomis in a Maine Principals' Association class B girls basketball semifinal game played Wednesday evening at Cross Insurance Center.

Nokomis jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the first quarter and held a 13-8 lead after the first eight minutes of play.

The Warriors held a 22-20 halftime lead.

Shaw gave the Trojans a 26-25 lead with 3:55 remaining in the third quarter. It was their first lead since they held a 2-0 lead early in the first quarter.

Kelsie Richards gave the Warriors a 28-26 lead when she made a steal and converted the free throw.

Shaw made consecutive baskets to give the Trojans a 30-28 lead.

Hannah's younger sister Kelsey Shaw also came up big for the Trojans.

Kelsey Shaw finished with 13 points, six rebounds, and five steals.

Hannah Shaw, Kelsey Shaw, and Sarah Phelps all made free throws in the fourth quarter to secure the victory for the Trojans.

MDI (18-2) will play in the Eastern Maine championship game on Saturday afternoon against Presque Isle.

The only two losses for the Trojans came against Presque Isle.

Nokomis shot under 30 percent from the field and 7-16 from the free throw line.

Kelsie Richards finished with 16 points, six rebounds, five steals, and three assists for the Warriors.

Mikayla Charters added 11 points and five rebounds. Anna Mackenzie recorded nine points and 11 rebounds.

Nokomis finished the season with a 19-1 record.
