Shaw easily defeats Elizabeth City State in CIAA Tournament

Shaw University took quick control of their quarterfinal game against Elizabeth City State University and never looked back. The Bears defeated the Vikings 71-48 Thursday at the 2011 CIAA Tournament in the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, NC.

Shaw jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead and was hot from the floor all game. The Bears took advantage of Elizabeth City State struggling on offense and their own hot offense to secure the victory.

Elizabeth City State especially struggled in the first half when the Vikings only made 21% of their field goals. In contrast, Shaw made 52% of their field goals in the first half and an astonishing 68% in the second. The Bears held a 35-13 lead at halftime.

Tony Smith led Shaw with 21 points and Raheem Smith added 19 points. Elizabeth City State University’s Trent Bivens led the Vikings with 12 points.

Shaw now faces Johnson C. Smith University in the semifinals Friday at 7pm. Johnson C. Smith defeated Bowie State University in their CIAA Tournament quarterfinal game.
