Shauna Cross, whose novel, Whip It, has been adapted to film by director, Drew Barrymore, is now busy writing the script for another novel, If I Stay, by Gayle Forman for Twilight director, Catherine Hardwicke. This is according to Steve Weintraub at Collider.com. Mr. Weintraub spoke with Ms. Cross at a recent press event for Whip It in Los Angeles.
According to Cross:
"We’re just about to go to cast and it’s a pretty special project. It’s kind of…it’s got an edge to it and it’s funny and heartbreaking and it’s a little “Lovely Bones” esque. There is definitely a lot of humor in there but it’s definitely more dramatic than I’ve done before. It’s been an amazing experience and it’s an incredible story."
If I Stay is about a young woman who is in a car accident and the 24 hours afterwards while she is in a coma.
Cross wasn't sure where the project fit in with the director's schedule. Following on her success with Twilight, which made the most money for a feature film by any female director, Hardwicke is already attached to an edgy remake of Hamlet with Emile Hirsch as well as a Gothic adaptation of "Little Red Riding Hood," The Girl with the Red Riding Hood, which is being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. According to Variety, the If I Stay project will be with Summit Entertainment.
