Shaun White, Nate Holland, Elena Hight among Tahoe names at Winter X Games

The recent Winter X Games had its share of notable performers, demonstrating that the area produces some of the country’s top young talent in skiing and snowboarding.

Although he can’t be claimed as a Tahoe product, Shaun White certainly has ties to Lake Tahoe ski resorts now. White, who won the Superpipe at this year’s Winter X Games, has chosen Northstar ski resort as one of his primary training areas this year. His presence led to Northstar building a 22-foot high superpipe that is more than 500 feet long.

White took home his fifth consecutive gold medal in the men’s Snowboard Superpipe with an unprecedented perfect score of 100 in the Jan. 29 competition at Buttermilk Mountain in Aspen.

This summerVail Resorts, Inc. announced a worldwide multi-year partnership agreement with White, who represents all six of Vail Resorts, which include Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone in Colorado, and Heavenly and Northstar.

There were a dozen Lake Tahoe competitors at this year’s Winter X Games.

Another Northstar athlete, Elena Hight, won silver in the women’s Snowboard Superpipe, while Torstein Horgmo took the silver in the Snowboard Big Air.

Squaw Valley’s Nate Holland had another excellent showing at the Winter X Games. Holland claimed his sixth Winter X gold medal in the men’s Snowboarder X, bringing his total Winter X Games medal tally to nine.

Jayson Hale of Sugar Bowl ski resort took home a bronze medal in the men’s Snowboarder X.

Squaw Valley freestyle coach Brita Sigourney, who was a silver medalist at last year’s Winter X Games, received a bronze in the women’s Ski Halfpipe and landed the competition’s only 1080.

“Lake Tahoe has a long history of producing some of the world’s best ski and snowboard athletes,” said Andy Chapman of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association. “With the largest concentration of ski resorts in the country, Tahoe is naturally a magnet for pioneers in the sport who continually push the envelope in their training.”
