According to the Edge School website, Shattuck-St. Mary's boarding school out of Fairbault, Minnesota has won the 2014 World Sports School Challenge by beating OHA Prep 8-1 at Calgary's Markin MacPhail Arena on Wednesday.
Shattuck-St. Mary's is considered one of the most elite hockey high school programs in the United States, as their alumni includes hockey superstars Sidney Crosby and Jonathan Toews.
On New Year's Day, Shattuck-St. Mary's got outstanding offensive performances from Clayton Keller and Roy Radke. Keller had two goals and three assists and Radke a hat trick. Shattuck-St. Mary's also ot a multi-point game from Rem Pitlick, who notched a goal and an assist.
In five games, Shattuck-St. Mary's outscored their opponents 47-5. It will be interesting to see how long Shattuck-St. Mary's will continue to play in the World Sports School Challenge or if they will return to the Mac's Midget Hockey Tournament, an event Shattuck-St. Mary's won from 1999-2001 and again in 2003. It wouldn't be surprising if Shattuck-St. Mary's will choose the latter to get better competition if European countries will continue to bring their national under-17 teams to the Mac's Midget Tournament like Finland and Switzerland did this year.
Meanwhile in the bronze medal game, Delta Hockey Academy defeated Edge Prep 4-3.
