Shasta Assassins v Water Damage: Flood Water Roller Derby's debut bout

This Saturday, Feb 16, after months of preparation, Placer County's one and only competitive women's flat track roller derby league, the Flood, will roll onto the track alongside Shasta Roller Derby. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the action starts at 6:30 p.m.

Don't you know it's going to rain?

Flood Water Roller Derby (The Flood) was founded in June 2012 at the Johnson Springview Park in Rocklin, CA. During its rocky birth, many naysayers said it could never work and even the committed few arriving at practice on certain days would frequently lose hope. With nothing but a track drawn with sidewalk chalk on the blacktop, the Flood kept themselves afloat with a wish and a prayer, and a little help from the Shasta Assassins (their derby mid-wives).

In the rainy months the Flood made the move indoors to the Placer County Fairgrounds and this Saturday (Feb. 16) the fledgling league is doing something most thought would never come to pass, they are competing in their first bout, hosted by their friends, Shasta Roller Derby.

You only hurt the ones you love

Shasta was pivotal in helping the Flood build and promote their fledgling league, but that doesn't mean they intend to compete with anything less than white hot rigor. Shasta will have both home track and home elevation advantage. Though the Flood is a new league, it is equipped with seasoned skaters. Both teams have been practicing hard, especially with the added concern of the new WFTDA rule set this January which has eliminated minors. No doubt, regardless of who wins, loses, or fouls out, the after party will be all smiles. That's after; game time is different all together. It's been said plenty of times before but in this case it must resonate more: with so many variables in play no one has any idea what to expect. You wouldn't wanna miss it.

The details

Wish Upon a Skate will be held at the Shasta District Fairgrounds (1890 Briggs St, Anderson CA) and proceeds will support the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Tickets are $12 at the door, kids 10 and under are free. Doors open at 5:30 pm and the action starts at 6:30 pm. Bring a sweater and a folding chair for added comfort. And bring your wallet, because the Flood has brand new merchandise for sale.
