Author Sharyn Shields was recently nominated for the Georgia Author of the Year Award for 2014 for her first novel, “The Wisdom of Dr. Soles” a children’s book. The Georgia Writers Association recognizes Georgia's authors of excellence by presenting the Georgia Author of the Year Awards (GAYA). The GAYA has the distinction of being the oldest literary awards in the Southeastern United States. The GAYA honors both independently published authors and those whose books are published by traditional publishing houses. This is Shields first nomination.
Sheilds is a member of my church, Cross Culture Church here in Lithonia and I was so proud of her nomination that I just had to make her sit down and answer a few questions about it.
So how does it feel to be nominated?
I am extremely excited and I anticipate this nomination to open up many doors for exposure of this delightful book! The awards event is June 7, 2014 and the winner will be announced at the gala affair! I hope that I win but even if I don’t, just being nominated is truly a prize in itself!
Your book has been described as one that helps people embrace their difference and know that everyone has a designed purposed. What made you decide to write the book?
Too many of our youth today put a lot of time and effort into being like someone else without taking the time to discover who they were designed or created to be. They are so preoccupied with other people’s lives that they miss out on the journey and self-discovery of who they could be. I decided to write The Wisdom of Dr. Soles to encourage children and adults that their purpose is far greater than their circumstances and that purpose begins by walking in one’s own shoes. And its only when you walk in your own shoes that dreams are realized and purposed discovered.
What do you hope to accomplish most with the book?
What I hope to accomplish with the book is to reach youth not just locally but internationally, imparting wisdom about importance of understanding purpose and using that purpose to change lives, thus making our world a better place for. I also hope to turn the story into a regular TV show and an animated movie! I intend The Wisdom of Dr. Soles to not only be a book/TV series but a house hold name.
So what is next for you?
You know I am often asked what’s next for me, well I’m also a healthy relationship educator and motivational speaker and will be teaching youth in Cape Town, South Africa during the summer. I enjoy using creative ways that help children and adults discover who they are and I welcome the opportunity to share and impart in a way that is impactful and purposeful.
