'Sharknado 2': Tara Reid and Ian Ziering returning

On Thursday, January 30 posted the news that the science fiction sequel "Sharknado 2: The Second One" will include returning cast members Tara Reid and Ian Ziering. The film is the sequel to "Sharknado" the wildly successful Syfy film about sharks that get swept up in a waterspout and distributed around Los Angeles terrifying the residents.

The new film is expected to take place in New York City and filming will begin in late February. Ian Ziering, who played bar owner Fin in the original film, will reprise his role as a main cast member. Tara Reid played Fin' estranged wife April and will also be returning. Much like the original, the sequel will show sharks being unleashed by a deadly storm and attacking famous sites around the Big Apple.

Reid and Ziering are the only two cast members from the original film to announce their return, although waitress Nova (portrayed by Cassie Scerbo) and April and Fin's son Matt (Chuck Hittinger) also survived the attack in Los Angeles.

The success of the first film was based on trending hashtags on the social networking website Twitter. Syfy Channel created a contest for viewers to chose the name of the sequel through Twitter. The title "Sharknado 2: The Second One" was chosen as the winner last summer.

The film is scheduled to air on the Syfy Channel in July 2014. Thunder Levin will return to write the script and the film will be directed by Anthony Ferrante. The original film received a limited theatrical release based on the popularity of the film when it aired on the Syfy Channel, but it's unclear if the sequel will also be released in theaters.
