Kmart was filming a commercial at a Los Angeles home when a shark being used in the production died.
The LA Times reported the news on March 14. The five foot shark was shipped from New York to LA and died on March 6.
An above ground pool was holding the shark during the commercial shoot. The white tipped shark was in the pool while actors jumped into and out of the pool. The shark showed signs of stress and was immediately given oxygen and injections of adrenaline. The shark died later in the day after removal from the pool.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wrote a letter to Kmart asking them to stop using ads with wild animals in them. They also wrote a letter to the American Humane Association giving a whistleblower's story regarding the death of the shark. The whistleblower worked on the commercial, according to PETA.
The American Humane Association shut down the filming of the commercial as soon as stress in the shark was noticed.
The incident is being investigated.
