R. M. Thorn, a confederate soldier from 1863 stationed at Camp Griggs, Wrote "I hope I never have to face the cannons..." in a letter he wrote to a Miss Abi. It was apparent that Maurenzo Smith understood this quote during his recent boxing match with Shannon "The Cannon" Briggs. The Tampa Bay crowd watched as Briggs demonstrated the accuracy and destructive power in his arsenal early in the first round. Maurenzo Smith was clearly unprepared for the fight that Briggs had in mind. Smith seemed to panic (in a fashion similar to a myotonic goat) as he repeatedly dodged Briggs and dove onto the mat to escape the ever encroaching Briggs. Smith who had lost his last seven fights, was knocked out at 2:59 of the 1st round by TKO. (Highlights from the Briggs event can be found in the video and slideshow areas.)

Roman Guevara's bid for the Junior Middle Weight InterContinental Title ended quickly. Ali "The Panther" Tareh finished Guevara by TKO at 2:56 seconds in the second round of the co-main event of the night. Tareh, at 41, who had been in training for six months, had lost 20 pounds and appeared to be in superior shape. "I have been working toward a title shot for years" and "felt his opportunity had finally come... and he wasn't going to let it go to waste" Tareh told the Tampa Bay Examiner Stephanie Melendez before the fight. His convincing and swift win over, that left Guevara in agony on the mat, seemed to demonstrate his sincerity.

Special participants included Antonio "Magic Man" Tarver and Jeff "Left Hook" Lacy. Also seen in attendance were local boxing and kickboxing hero's like seven time world kickboxing champion Erik Marshal (who supplied the film of Briggs), local boxer and world kickboxing champion Viktor Kulakovski and many others. Antonio Tarver's fight promotion company is nearing its upcoming Fathers Day (06/15/2014) début at the Ayva Center in Houston, Texas as he continues to strengthen his relationships in the south. The future is also on the mind of Jeff Lacy who is preparing for his fight at the in Montreal at the Bell Center. Lacy is scheduled to fight the undefeated Artur Beterbiev 4-0-0 (4) on May, 24th 2014.
