Shannon Sharpe exclusive interview

Record breaking NFL Hall of Famer and CBS sports analyst Shannon Sharpe took a time out from Super Bowl XLVIII madness to talk about why he's snacking on Butterfinger Peanut Butter Cups this Super Bowl, which quarterback he'd want on his team, and his own game day superstitions.

MM: Do you see more Super Bowls being played outside in the future? E.g. Denver? New England?
Shannon Sharpe: No. The NFL caught a break on this one. I don’t think they’ll push their luck again.

MM: What’s your favorite Super Bowl snack? Nachos? Wings?
SS: No, I’m going to be eating Butterfinger Peanut Butter Cups. They go straight out of the bag and into the mouth. Moving crunchiness. They’re new and have been out about 2 weeks. Go get them.

MM: As a three time Super Bowl winner, how did you keep your cool and ultimately thrive again and again and again under supersize Super Bowl pressure?
SS: Yes, 100 million people in the U.S. are watching, and probably 600 million around the world. And the festivities, the parties, the flashes of fans’ cameras going off all goes along with it. But at the end of the day, we’re there to play a football game. You just play just like any other game.

MM: Did you have any game day superstitions?
SS: I was very superstitious every game. For home games, I’d stay in the same hotel room. I went to bed at the same time, and would wake up at the same time. Everything was the same.

MM: Peyton Manning haters and lovers all want to know: Will Peyton pull it off on Sunday?
SS: I think he has to play well to win. At the same time, the Seahawks have a very good defense. So, yes, I think the Broncos will win. But no, I wouldn’t be surprised if Seattle won.

MM: There’s so much drama over whether Tom Brady or Peyton Manning is the greatest quarterback. You’re on the field – who would you want passing to you?
SS: I’d want John Elway [laughs]. I like Peyton. What Manning does, and for him to do it at a high level consistently for so long, that speaks volumes. I’m going with Manning on this one.

MM: Where do you see the future of the quarterback position? E.g. Manning is more old school and relies on his arm. But guys like Russell Wilson predominantly use their legs to extend the play.
SS: The game is evolving, and the quarterback position is changing. The genie is out of the bottle and there's no turning back.

MM: What are your thoughts on Roger Goodell expanding the playoff bracket?
SS: I don’t like the idea. The NFL is a business and in the business of making money. I can understand that. But I don’t want a team to play because they’re extending the bracket. I want a team to play their way in.

MM: You and your brother, Sterling, are both record-breaking NFL stars. What do you attribute the Sharpe family success to?
SS: We were blessed with a lot of talent and drive. We had a lot of great coaches, and family that gave us advice and put us in the right direction. And we stayed focused on what we wanted and we didn’t get sidetracked.
