Shanghai is an affordable Chinese take-out restaurant with a few tables and chairs for dine in business in the heart of Tonawanda (City). They have a very diverse menu which includes the standard Chinese fare, as well as subs, pizza, wings, salads, jalapeno poppers and calzones.
The food is of very good quality and the portion sizes are more than adequate enough.
I have ordered from the American side of the menu, and the Greek salad is exceptionally good. The small ($4.95) is a huge salad served with a generous portion of feta cheese and a large warm pita.
The fish fry, pizza and subs are of decent quality, but there are better places in Tonawanda to get these food items. Stick to the salads and Chinese menu.
On the appetizer side of the menu the shrimp toast (4/$3.25), fried wonton (10/$3.25) and boneless spareribs (small $4.95; large $9.35) are all very good tasting choices.
The daily lunch specials on the Chinese side of the menu are served 7 days a week from 11:00am until 3:00pm. All lunch specials are $4.95 and include your choice of pork fried or white rice, and an egg roll or soup (egg drop, wonton, hot & sour) or a can of soda. There is an extra charge of 75cents for chicken, beef or shrimp fried rice.
Dinner specials on the Chinese side of the menu are served 7 days a week and can be ordered anytime. All dinner specials are $6.95 and include your choice of pork fried or white rice, and an egg roll. There is an extra charge of 75cents for chicken, beef or shrimp fried rice for both lunch and dinner specials. Well worth the extra 75cents for the shrimp fried rice. They put a lot of small shrimp in the shrimp fried rice.
My recommendation for the lunch special is the teriyaki chicken with chicken fried rice and egg roll. $4.95 gets you a little smaller appetizer size portion of teriyaki chicken (listed on the menu for $5.75/5 as an appetizer) with rice and an egg roll. You can easily share this with another person for lunch if you have smaller appetites. Split the egg roll and you've got lunch for less than $7 if you pick up instead of having it delivered.
My recommendation for the dinner special is the shrimp egg foo young. The dinner portion is huge, with 3 large egg foo young patties full of shrimp, more than enough for two people. Get the shrimp fried rice for an extra 75cents, order an extra egg roll for $1.20 and you have dinner for two for less than $10 if you pick up instead of opting for delivery.
Also recommended from the Chef's Specialties section is Happy Family ($10.95) and includes white rice, lobster, jumbo shrimp, lobster stick, chicken and pork in brown sauce sauteed with bamboo shoots, baby corn, water chestnuts, snow peas and straw mushrooms. More than enough for 2+ people.
The Family Dinner Special is a good value. Choose a small (feeds 2 to 3; $17.95) or large (feeds 3 to 4 $29.95) size Dinner A (2 egg rolls; wonton or egg drop soup, roast pork or chicken fried rice, roast pork or chicken lo mein, roast pork or chicken with broccoli, General Tso's or sesame chicken. Dinner B (small $18.95; large $32.25) includes 2 egg rolls, wonton or egg drop soup, beef or shrimp lo mein, beef or chicken with garlic sauce, General Tso's or sesame chicken, teriyaki chicken or beef. Dinner C (small $19.95; large $33.95) includes 2 egg rolls, wonton or egg drop soup, beef or shrimp fried rice, house special lo mein, shrimp or chicken with broccoli, General Tso's or sesame chicken, orange flavored chicken.
Shanghai is open Monday through Thursday 11:00am until 10:30pm, Friday and Saturday 11:00am until 11:30pm, and Sunday from 12:00pm until 10:30pm.
