Shanahan named Maple Leafs president

According to TSN, Canadian Olympic gold medalist Brendan Shanahan was named the Toronto Maple Leafs' president and alternative governor on Friday. Shanahan has worked directly with the National Hockey League since 2009. He initially was the league's vice president of hockey and business development and in 2011 replaced Colin Campbell as the director of player safety.

Shanahan, a hall of famer, played in the National Hockey League from 1987-2009 with the New Jersey Devils, St. Louis Blues, Hartford Whalers, Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers. He had 656 goals and 698 assists for 1354 points in 1524 regular season games. Shanahan's finest season came in 1993-94 when he scored a career high 52 goals and 50 assists for 102 points.

Ironically that year Shanahan had 211 penalty minutes. It is quite interesting that a player who would later be in charge of player safety, would eclipse 200 minutes in penalties during a single season. Shanahan is the only player in National Hockey League history with 600 career goals and 2,000 penalty minutes.

Even though Shanahan was born in Etobicoke, Ont., this will be the first time he has been part of the Maple Leafs organization. He played his junior career with the London Knights prior to being drafted by the New Jersey Devils, second overall in the 1987 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

Shanahan also has a rich history representing Canada in international tournaments. He won a gold medal for Canada at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. He also won a Canada Cup in 1991 and a World Championship in Milan, Italy in 1994.

In 41 games internationally for Canada, Shanahan has 14 goals and eight assists for 22 points. At the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Shanahan had one assist. He recorded his assist on a goal by Jarome Iginla in Canada's 7-1 semifinal win over Belarus.
