Sham ‘Rock’ the Block 2013 to fill Lake George streets this weekend

This year’s Sham “Rock” the Block party in Lake George kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 16, on Lower Amherst Street next to Shepard Park. This is the third year for the two-day Irish Celebration that features Celtic music, games, bounce houses, pony rides and an outdoor beer garden with frothy brew being drawn from Adirondack Pub and Brewery’s new draft trailer. Musician John Eisenhart will serve as Master of Ceremonies both days.

Saturday will feature a dog talent show hosted by the Dog Cabin. Dog owners may register for the opportunity to show off their pet’s unique talents and win prizes. Sign-up is at the Dog Cabin, 32 Montcalm Street. The show begins at 2:30 p.m. For more information, call Lisa at 668-3251 or 522-4549.

New this year is a bar crawl scheduled for Saturday. Crawlers will meet at Duffy’s Tavern on Lower Amherst at 2 p.m. The crawl, which will make stops at eight area pubs, each offering drink specials, begins at the Tankard Tavern of Fort William Henry and ends at Duffy’s, site of the block party. Official Commemorative Sham “Rock” the Block beer mugs are available at Judd’s Tavern for $5.

Participants are encouraged to dress in St. Patty’s Day-themed attire. Secret judges will be moving through the crowd on Saturday to identify the best-dressed family. The winning clan will be announced Saturday evening and awarded a prize.

Sunday, March 17, the Lake George St. Patrick’s Day parade steps off from Westbrook Road at noon and proceeds up Canada Street to Amherst. Last year’s inaugural parade boasted two pipe bands, step dancers and several floats. The Dog Cabin invites dog owners to join in the parade with their pets. The parade will begin lining up at 11 a.m. on Westbrook Road.

Following the parade, the band Celtic Cross will perform on the outdoor stage on Lower Amherst. Lake George businesses throughout the Village are offering specials. Adirondack Winery on Canada Street is having free wine tastings both days; The Lake George Bakery is selling Irish soda bread and Bailey’s cheesecake. Pizza Jerks is offering a St. Patty’s Rueben Pizza and many local eateries are running corned beef and cabbage specials.
