Shallow grave holds remains of tortured dog

On Tuesday night, the Portage Animal Protective League received a call from the Ravenna Police Department. They were asked to investigate a shallow grave in an empty lot located at Chestnut and Hazen Roads, according to Fox8.

What the Portage APL found was very disturbing. Buried in the grave was what had once been a beautiful pit bull terrier. She had been tortured and strangled, then buried in a grave surrounded by trash.

The humane officers at the APL often see animals that are neglected and abused. Yet sometimes, an incident is so horrendous that even they have a hard time comprehending it. On the Portage APL Facebook page they state:

Chestnut and Hazen Road, Ravenna, OH
41.150189861655 ; -81.243659779429

No matter how much abuse you see, you are still nauseated, sad and angry at acts like this… MERCY, tortured and killed. Please help us find her murderer!

The dog had been named Mercy by an APL Humane Officer. For mercy is what she deserved. But did not receive. The Portage APL describes what happened to the dog:

A cable (from a TV), was tightly embedded in her neck and extra cable wrapped all around her… and a rope of sorts hung out of her mouth. Based on her body condition, she had also been drug by a vehicle. This girl died a horrifying death and was tossed out with trash.

Mercy is described as a young female pit bull, brown with white on her chest and neck. Even at a young age, she had already had a litter or two of puppies. Photos showing her condition were too graphic for the Portage APL to release.

If anyone has information on Mercy and who strangled and dragged this beautiful dog to her death, please call Portage APL at 330-296-4022, ext. 102.
