Threepenny Theatre in Memphis is starting a Kickstarter campaign to help take care of production expenses for the 2014 theatre season. The uniqueness about Threepenny Theatre is the fact it allows the public to set their own ticket price, but this can only occur if they have additional funds to pay for the production costs.
The first event involved in the campaign is called Shakesbeer, and requires a minimum $10 cash donation for the event or through a Kickstarter.com campaign that will launch that evening. The event will be held at Crossover Arts at 430 North Cleveland, from 7pm – 10pm on December 14, 2013. The event will feature several local craft beers, as well as selections from the company’s upcoming production of Macbeth.
In a statement from the theatre company they write, "We need your help to make this innovative funding model work. A $10 minimum donation will be requested. Join us! We will have excerpts from 3PT's upcoming production of Macbeth, with beer from WISEACRE and GHOST RIVER, and live music from Spencer Kellum!"
“We’re taking a risk, and we need the community’s help to make this innovative funding model work,” says Shaleen Cholera, 3PT’s Executive Director. “We recognize that the cost of admission can be a tremendous barrier to many people experiencing theatre. We want to do something different and be something different in this city. We’re throwing a party so we can ask our friends and everyone who supports great theatre in our community for a few dollars. That will help us us to generate the funds we need to produce a season of great shows that everybody can enjoy.”
Artistic Director and Macbeth director Matt Crewse says, “A big turnout on December 14 will ensure that we’ve got the resources we need to keeping making exceptional work for our growing audience.”
Please plan on making it out to the event, and if there is a reason you cannot, please contribute to the Kickstarter campaign.
