There are some major rumblings going on behind the scenes at some of Atlanta TV stations that many viewers may not be aware of. It’s no secret that Atlanta’s TV news has a very high turnover rate. There have been some recent developments that are causing a major change in the faces that present the news to us every day. The first shot I noticed was the sudden departure of beloved CBS Atlanta afternoon anchor JaQuitta Williams.
Williams’ departure from CBS Atlanta caused some including AJC TV & Radio reporter Rodney Ho to speculate that her leaving wasn’t voluntary. Williams was an anchor/reporter for WSB-TV for a number of years. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. After beating back the disease she joined CBS Atlanta’s news team in 2010
In mid-July it was announced that CBS Atlanta declined to renew “Better Mornings Atlanta” anchor Brandon Rudat’s contract. Rudat seemed to have brought an energy to the morning show that seem to help boost viewership. Rudat’s tattoos which he initially hid during remote assignments under a long sleeve t-shirt in the summer months eventually became the focus of the show’s advertising campaign. Atlanta embraced him and may prove to be a damaging move by the station who trails the other three Atlanta news outlets.
This week the AJC reported that former CBS Atlanta anchor Cynne Simpson would be replacing Amanda Davis at Fox 5. Davis’ retirement came after she had been absent for months following a DUI arrest in November. In April the station put together a tribute to announce her retirement.
Simpson will anchor the station's 5 p.m. newscast with Tom Haynes and the 10 p.m. newscast with Russ Spencer. Simpson will start her new on-air position on August 12.
