Shaggy hails Grammy nomination, excited about 2012

Internationally-renowned Dancehall/Reggae superstar, Orville “Shaggy” Burrell continues to bask in constant glory that’s surrounded him for nearly two decades in the industry. Following 2011’s achievements, he hopes to build on this consistent run in the New Year.

Shaggy’s list of accomplishments this year include his 10th studio album, Summer In Kingston, his fourth career Grammy nomination for said album as well as hit singles such as Girlz Dem Luv We featuring Mavado and the internationally acclaimed song, Sugarcane.  Summer In Kingston became Shaggy’s fifth number one album; re-establishing his presence as one of Jamaica’s most prominent artistes in history.

According to Shaggy, his most recent Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album proves a humbling acknowledgement for all those who worked on making Summer In Kingston a success.

“It's good to be nominated for music's highest honor. Each time we're mentioned means that we've definitely been recognized for our work which is a great feeling for me and my band,”he said.

Additionally, Shaggy attributes his consistency towards constantly revamping his image and material in an effort to maintain relevance within the music industry.

“As an artist we always reinvent ourselves and within the Reggae fraternity it is so quick paced that we always come up with new ideas and ways to reinvent ourselves,” he said.

Meanwhile, Shaggy expressed optimism regarding his upcoming Shaggy and Friends charity concert that was rescheduled to January 7, 2012 as a result of general elections in Jamaica. With this being his third edition of the event, Shaggy intimated that his love for children and supporting worthy causes drives him to continue with such a promotion.

“When I commit myself to a great cause, I really commit myself to the fullest and go all the way. As a person with a big heart, you can't help yourself but want to help every child you visit in the hospital,” he explained.

Though the rescheduling of Shaggy and Friends due to the December 29 elections caused several stars to pull out of the show, including Grammy-winning R&B superstar, Ne-Yo, fellow R&B singer, Lauryn Hill will still headline the show. Shaggy stated that getting the former Fugees member to agree to this show was a simple task once he proposed the idea.

“Lauren and I toured together in Australia and she became very committed to the cause and since she's partially Jamaican she was rooted in joining me for this,” he said.
