Shadarobah means "May The Future Be Better Than The Past." in a Native American tongue. It fits a place where Michelle Heitz, Chrissy Francies and Lorree Dafforn (and many others!) promise no horse in a life or death situation will be turned away. At Shadarobah, their first goal is rescuing horses.  Their second is to help anyone whose dream is to have a horse in their lives.

Shadarobah Horse Rescue was founded in the fall of 2008 and since then has helped over 70 horses in need of homes due to neglect, abuse, poor economic conditions, or would otherwise have been sent to slaughter. About half of those have been adopted. Others are used as project horses, meaning they are there to teach visitors about  horse ownership or for riding.

There are currently 9 horses up for adoption--watch the slideshow for those currently adoptable. Every horse is welcome back to Shadarobah is the match isn't right and in most cases, adoption fees are refunded. Leasing prior to adoption is also an option. Adoption fees vary per horse--call for more information.

Anyone can help a rescued horse!

Volunteer:
You can volunteer your time to help care for and love the rescued horses. No experience necessary. Call Amanda at 260-237-7298 for information on how to become a volunteer.

Foster a Horse:
Not everyone has the facilities, but if you are one of the lucky ones, you can foster a rescue horse. It could mean the difference between having "room for one more", and having to turn a horse away.

Sponsorship:
With a monthly monetary commitment, individuals or groups can sponsor a horse. Sponsors are also needed for hoof trimming, teeth floating, and vaccinations. Call or email us for information on sponsoring a horse's expenses. Remember, only $5.00 buys a bale of hay and $8.00 buys a bag of feed. Other needed items include:

  • Hay

  • Shavings For Bedding

  • Banamine

  • Wormers

  • Medications

  • Mineral Blocks and Holders

  • Halters

  • Lead Ropes

  • Corner Feeders

  • Plastic Stall Rakes

  • Pitch Forks

Got some extra time? Electricians, plumbers, builders and handymen who can donate services are also needed.
