The long renovation project of J. Paul Leonard Library at San Francisco State University is nearing its end. The Library is reopening in stages this semester, starting on January 23 when students return after the long winter break.
On the ready for the first phase of opening will be the Book Pickup/Checkout and a quiet study space, located on the Library's first floor. The study area will eventually be part of a larger 100-seat cafe scheduled to open in late spring or early summer 2012.
By later in the spring semester all areas of the Library and Academic Technology will be open and available to the entire University community. Library collections that have been housed elsewhere, such as at Sutro Library on Winston Drive, will also return to the new J. Paul Leonard Library in late spring or early summer.
Big changes should satisfy library users, especially after such a long period of having to make-do with reduced facilities since the library saw construction activity starting in 2008. Construction was for renovation including seismic strengthening, and an additon of more than 70,000 square feet.
Students and faculty continued to have have access to the library services, although collections were available by request and distributed from various temporary locations.
When fully open, the new library will include 50 percent more seating, 300 percent more group study rooms, and twice as many computers as before.
Also on slate will be a 24-hour Research Commons area with six group-study rooms. The new J. Paul Leonard library promises to be worth the long wait.
Initial opening hours for the new library are:
Monday to Thursday 8:00 am to 9:00 pm; Friday 8:00 am to 6:00 pm; Saturday 10:00 am to 6:00 pm; closed Sundays
