SFJAZZ summer shows runs from Cuban to club jazz

SFJAZZ has assembled another intriguing smorgasbord of groove for its summer session, with shows covering everything from mambo to chamber jazz.

Concerts run from June 11-22 as part of the 32nd SF Jazz Festival and July 17 to Aug. 24 as the SFJAZZ Summer Sessions. Some highlights:

  • Buena Vista Social Club founder Juan de Marcos assembles a new cast of Afro-Cuban All Stars, June 11-14.
  • Club jazz legends Medeski, Martin & Wood augment the trio with increasingly groovalicious guitarist John Scofield, June 17.
  • Afrobeat royalty Seun Kuti lets loose a rhythmic storm with his version of dad Fela's Egypt 80 collective, June 19.
  • The irresistibly sensual Pacific Mambo Orchestra makes music for lovers, June 21.
  • Local boy makes wow! Benny Green performs with his well-oiled piano trio, July 17-20.
  • Young trumpet wunderkind Christian Scott shares a bill with fellow horn explorer Sean Jones, Aug. 21.
  • Miles Davis alumni such as Etienne Charles, Antoine Roney and Darryl Jones revisit the giant's electric era, Aug. 23.
