SF learns: Yahoo names PayPal executive as CEO

Breaking news coming in to San Francisco is that in Sunnyale, California, Yahoo! Inc. has named it's new CEO.

Scott Thompson, who was president of eBay Inc.'s PayPal department, is the new Yahoo! CEO.

Sunnyvale is just over an hour's drive from San Francisco and is in the Silicon Valley area.

Since early September there has been no CEO at Yahoo!

Previously, Carol Bartz had been the CEO at the Internet company, but she was fired after 2 1/2 years in the position. She had tried to turn the company around. Since Bartz was ousted in September, Yahoo!'s Chief Financial Officer, Tim Morse, has been the interim CEO.

According to ABC 7 News in San Francisco, Thompson's new position in Sunnyvale will begin on Jan. 9. Morse will then return to his previous position of CFO.

Thompson, states ABC 7 News, has worked as the president of PayPal--eBay's online payment service--since January, 2008.

Thompson had previously been PayPal's senior vice president and the company's chief technology officer.

“Scott brings to Yahoo! a proven record of building on a solid foundation of existing assets and resources to reignite innovation and drive growth, precisely the formula we need at Yahoo!,” stated Roy Bostock, Chairman of the Yahoo! Board, to Techcrunch.com.
