Hitchins was 62 years old.

Hitchens had been the winner of the 2011 National Magazine Award for Columns and Commentary.  But in addition to having written several magazine and newspaper pieces, Hitchins was also the author of 17 books.

Among those books were "The Trial of Henry Kissinger (in 2001)" and "God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything (in 2007)."

Hitchens was an Englishman by birth.  He was born in Portsmouth in 1949. He went on to graduate in 1970 from Oxford University, around an hour away from London. He then became a contributing editor at Vanity Fair in November 1992.

Said Vanity Fair Editor, Graydon Carter: "There will never be another like Christopher. A man of ferocious intellect, who was as vibrant on the page as he was at the bar. Those who read him felt they knew him, and those who knew him were profoundly fortunate souls."

"RIP Christopher Hitchens," says Karen Allan.  "You will be missed."
