SF learns: Snowstorm heading east from Colorado

SF learns: Snowstorm heading east from Colorado

Here in San Francisco the weather continues to be unseasonably warm. But if you are headed for Denver, then be prepared to pack your winter clothes.

There was near-zero visibility there and a large area of Interstate 70 only just reopened on Saturday morning.  (See yesterday's article on the snowstorm coming in: SF news: Storm warning for Rockies)

Officials there had been forced to close the complete 160 miles of the westbound lanes that run between the state line of Kansas and metro Denver.  Also closed was "a 70-mile stretch of eastbound lanes from metro Denver to the plains town of Limon, " says USA Today.

Those who were flying into Denver or out of it, discovered that 600 flights were cancelled.  That's because there was six foot of snow in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. It was by far the most powerful storm in the Colorado area for the season so far.  (See snow warning video from yesterday, here: http://www.examiner.com/top-news-in-san-francisco/sf-news-storm-warning-for-rockies-video)

The storm then moved toward the central plains on Saturday and today no cancellations were announced by Denver airport.

In Elbert County, says ABC News, blizzard conditions pounded the area.  Thankfully, now all winter storms for the Colorado area have expired although for the eastern plains there is still an advisory for snow.

In Nebraska, almost 13 inches of snow fell and there is currently a winter storm warning in effect for parts of western Nebraska.

Just like the Rockies, the East Coast often gets hits with bad weather. Here is a story by this Examiner on what happened when Hurricane Irene hit earlier: Irene threatens to wreak havoc along the East Coast (photos, video))
