SF: Is Catherine Zeta-Jones bipolar?

San Francisco residents are learning from top news sources, like local KTVU Channel 2 News, that Catherine Zeta-Jones is ill.  This comes not long after actor Michael Douglas told "Today’s” Matt Lauer, that he had "got cancer beat."  Douglas's wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, has gone ahead and checked herself into a mental health clinic.

Zeta-Jones had been at Michael Douglas's side ever since he was given the diagnosis of throat cancer last  year but now she herself is looking for help with her disorder which, according to CNN, is bipolar II.

San Francisco resident, Cathy Menzies, says "Although it's sad, it's also good when a celebrity has an illness that is often not talked about. It will 'bring it out of the closet' so to speak and make the illness less of a stigma now."

According to the Mayo Clinic, bipolar II is not as severe as the bipolar I disorder.  The illness makes a person irritable and gives them mood swings, sometimes even several times a day.  Sometimes, however, the illness occurs just a few times a year.

“After dealing with the stress of the past year, Catherine, age 41, made the decision to check into a mental health facility for a brief stay to treat her bipolar II disorder. She’s feeling great and looking forward to starting work this week on her two upcoming films,” says her agent.

When Zeta-Jones begins filming it will be on two movies, “Playing the Field” and “Lay the Favorite."

The Welsh actress has had her fair share of stress over the last year.

In 2010, Zeta-Jones' stepson, Cameron Douglas, was given five years in prison on drug-related charges, says Popeater and her husband, Michael Douglas, was sued by his ex-wife, Diandra who wanted 50 percent of Douglas's movie profits from 'Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.'

Popeater.com does speculate about whether drugs may have been involved.

It reports that Catherine had a lot of trouble coping with Michael Douglas' diagnosis of cancer. "She was chain smoking and drinking." The entertainment news source says, however that "Her rep has not confirmed that her stay was related to substance abuse."

According to the BBC, Alun Thomas, a representative of the Welsh mental health charity, Hafal, in Zeta-Jones home country, says: "The important part of this news is Catherine has sought help.

"Many parts of the press can sensationalise this but I think it's important to discuss the issues sensitively and raise awareness.

"Many creative and famous people have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder... there are many people out there who have recovered and gone to be very productive in their lives."

San Francisco residents can look out for where Zeta-Jones movies are playing when they come to San Francisco by checking into sfgate.com.  Listings and times are given for San Francisco movie-goers on the website.
