One of the top news coming in to San Francisco is about the three American students, who were taken during a protest in Cairo and accused of throwing firebombs.

For many San Francisco residents, the story of the three American students is much like that of the three American hikers, who were from the San Francisco Bay Area.  (See one of those stories by this Examiner here: American hikers: 'Why we were held in Iran so long' (photos, video) )

The three American students, who were being held in Cairo, according to USA Today, are now on their way home to the USA.

According to the news source, the three American students have been identified as Luke Gates, of Bloomington, Ind.; Derrik Sweeney, of Jefferson City, Mo., and Gregory Porter, of Glenside, Pa.

All three American students caught planes on Saturday out of Egypt, said one airport official and an attorney, who is currently working for one of the three boys.

On Sunday, the three students were arrested near Tahrir Square, on the roof of their university building.  All three of them were studying at the University of Cairo.

They were accused of throwing gasoline bombs at the officials who were fighting protesters.

The three students were released on Thursday by court order and all three students were taken to Cairo airport on Friday, says USA Today.

The parents of Luke Gates want to spend time alone with their son when he returns.  A spokesperson for the family told press: "The Gates are really hopeful they can spend a little time with him without having to answer a lot of questions in the media spotlight."

Dozens have already died in the latest wave of violence and protests across Egypt, says news source Dallas Morning News.

According to Reuters.com, protesters are accusing the military of clinging to power since it took over after an uprising toppled President Hosni Mubarak back on February 11th (See article here: Egypt: Huge anti-Mubarak protest staged ).
