SF Giants inch closer to playoff berth with 4-2 win over Arizona

Jonathan Sanchez pitched, Juan Uribe and Pablo Sandoval hit, the Giants won.

With the proverbial playoff-carrot dangling in front of them, the SF Giants are in full stride to capture the division title, a feat that has eluded them since 2003.

All eyes were on the scoreboard too; watching the updates from the San Diego Padres/Chicago Cubs game being played down the coast in San Diego.  A near capacity crowd let out a collective "yeah" when the scoreboard posted a 4-2 Cubs lead early in the Giants game as they were mounting their own comeback from a 2-0 deficit.

The Diamondbacks took the early lead with a sac fly in the first inning and a solo homerun by Kelly Johnson in the third inning. That was all Jonathan Sanchez would allow giving up only one hit after that and striking out 6 in six innings of work.

Mike Fontenot, filling in for injured Freddy Sanchez at second base, singled in Andres Torres in the bottom of the third to get the Giants closer.  Juan Uribe homered in the sixth inning to tie the game at 2-2, and Nate Schierholtz punched a pinch-hit go-ahead single to left in the 6th that scored Pablo Sandoval with the eventual game winning run.

Brian Wilson came on to close out the game in the eighth with a five-out save. His 46th of the season.  Jonathan Sanchez picked up his 12 win against 9 losses while Rodrigo Lopez (7-15), the Diamondbacks starter, took the loss.

The Giants have moved Tim Lincecum up in the rotation to pitch Wednesday night against the Diamondbacks.  The move was made to make Lincecum available to pitch in case there is a one-game playoff Monday against the Padres.

Earlier in the day, the Reds, Yankees, and Rays all clinched playoff spots which is making the post-season picture more clear.
