Thankfully, I don't believe anyone died from eating too much pie. Today. The SF Food Wars: Pie or Die competition is a brilliantly simple competition. Attracting food professionals and home cooks alike, this contest brings out the sweet competitive nature in Bay Area foodies. It was a pleasure trying 20 different slices of pie and sorting out a winner for my ballot. My husband and I shared a plate, thinking this would be the civilized thing to do. However, in the end we wound up fighting over bites.
The judges' first prize winner of the competition, Peace o' Pie, baked up a delicious Lemon Shaker Pie. The sweet citrus zippiness matched the sunny afternoon at the Ferry Building. Lemon pie always calls to me! Given that my husband stole the last bites of this winning morsel, I am glad that I did have a healthy taste.
Light, buttery flakes of pastry gave way to creamy lemony goodness. Perfumed with violet sugary sprinkles, this sophisticated offering of modest ingredients brought it home for team Peace o' Pie! Offering a generous piece for tasting, I liked the presentation of a traditional pie slice.
Tomorrow, more information about all of the winners, recipes, and some of my favorite cast of characters of the event.
