Only the uber-hip 18 Reasons culinary community hub could house the huge personalities of the SF food bloggers. These generous baking writers put away the laptops to produce for the SF Food Bloggers Bake sale, part of a national event to benefit Share Our Strength.
Having worked in professional kitchens, I know that preparing foods to package up for a bake sale requires a great deal of timely organization. That and a lot of LOVE. In order to capture what painstakingly took place in the kitchen and was wrapped in cellophane requires a great recipe, cleanliness, and execution.
It was a treat to meet Shauna Sever, Irvin Lin, and Karen Merzenich. There were many other bloggers. These stood out to me, as they were so personable and rushed to let me know they had lovingly prepared the goodies I admired.
There were so many colorful sweets, we limited our selections to the family's personal tastes. My daughter loved Piece of Cake's Bubble Gum Marshmallows. Soft and chewy, they had the perfect Double Bubble flavor and creamy bite of a perfectly house made marshmallow.
My daughter also selected a Rainbow Cake from Off The Meat Hook's blogger. Honestly, these bright colors in food are offensive to me. However, in the eyes of my four year old daughter, I easily saw the appeal. For the purpose of this article, I did sneak a spoon into this cute jar of layered colors. And oh, my... good sweetness.
For the hubby, we bought a dark delicious looking brownie. Unfortunately, we didn't realize that we had bought a few items from the gluten free, dairy free section. I find this type of baking to be unnecessary for my gluten and dairy friendly diet. Sadly, the Miss Bliss Brownie was a disappointment... we really missed the butter. It was too healthy to be called a brownie.
For my selection, a precious tiny almond cake round. I, again, chose from the gluten free section. The ingredient list included dairy (sigh of relief). However, brown rice flour, potato starch, and xanthan gum brought apprehension to my lips. Then I took a bite and was pleasantly delighted. What a delicious little almond cake! It was a stunning treat. Before dinner, I scarfed the little round down completely. Zest Bakery, great execution.
I hope these generous bloggers raised the $3K+ they were aiming for. This National event benefits the great Share Our Strength organization.
