SF Beer Week Suggestions for Thursday, Feb. 13

SF Beer Week is going full throttle, with special beers and food pairings all over the Bay Area. Particular emphasis is on cask-conditioned ales at Magnolia and Free Wheel. Also, the grand opening of the Triple Voodoo Brewery and Tap Room, and beer, chocolate and sex in Golden Gate Park.

Festival of Firkins
Spend your day sampling as many cask-conditioned ales as Magnolia can fit into its cellar and on top of the bar. Beginning at 11 a.m., the brewpub on Haight will have at least a dozen carefully sourced, cellared, vented and tapped ales flowing. Look for Magnolia’s own cask ales, as well as a selection from other brewers who share Magnolia’s passion for what the English refer to as “real ale.” They will be available by the pint or in tasters so you can compare different beers.

Beer Pairing Lunch with Prairie Artisan Ales

Monk’s Kettle will host a 3-course beer pairing lunch with Chase Healey, head brewer of Prairie Artisan Ales, featuring a sour, a saison and an infused version of BOMB! poured from a gravity firkin. Reservations required and can be made by e-mailing Greg Brown at greg@monkskettle.com.

A Night with the Geese
Sip rare Bourbon County Stout, Bourbon County Barley Wine and Lolita sour, in addition to Sofie and Honkers Ale, and enjoy Chicago-style dogs flown in from Chitown, along with Goose Island’s top dogs.

Triple Voodoo Brewery and Tap Room Grand Opening
Join Triple Voodoo as it christens its brand new brewery and tap room and celebrates its 4th anniversary. Doors open at noon and the first 20 people will get a commemorative Triple Voodoo tulip glass. One keg of saison test batch 1 will go on at 1 p.m., followed by a keg of test batch 2 at 3 p.m. A keg of bourbon barrel aged King Leopold Stout will go on at 5, and a keg of Grand Cru Belgian strong will be tapped at 7. Rosamunde Sausage Grill will join the fun at 4:30.

Monkey Paw Brewing Guest Taps
For the second year, Monkey Paw Brewing of San Diego will take over six of Social Kitchen’s taps with their off-kilter beers until the taps run dry. It’s a rare opportunity to sample brews seldom seen in Northern California.

The Bruery Grand Tasting
Fat Angel teams up with The Bruery from SoCal for another “mother of all beer tastings.” Twenty beers tasted side by side in four separate flights: Saison de Lente, Shegöat, Batch #1000: Bryeian, Humulus Lager, Tout Mais le Coller, The Wanderer, Ichigo Highway, Sour in the Rye w/ Kumquats, Mischief Gone Wild, Oude Tart w/ Sour Cherries, Sans Pagaie, Burly Gourd, Chocosaurus Rye, Acer Quercus, A Stein's Throw, 4 Calling Birds, 3 French Hens, Smoking Wood, Melange #1 and Grey Monday. Bear + Beer Dinner
Almanac is teaming up with Lazy Bear for an underground beer dinner featuring new and vintage Almanac releases (focus on barrel-aged) paired with 16 (sixteen) courses of Lazy Bear’s underground fine dining cuisine. Chefs and brewers will be on hand. Location will be e-mailed to confirmed ticket buyers shortly before the event. Proceeds go to support the work of The Food Pantry to increase access to food for hungry people. Wood Is Good
Lauren Salazar from New Belgium and the crew from Rare Barrel will be on hand for a fun-filled, educational evening about barrel aging beer. New Belgium will bring Clutch sour stout, Le Terroir dry-hopped sour ale and NBB Loves Leopold blackberry whiskey aged sour brown ale. Rare Barrel will bring its Shadows of Their Eyes dark sour ale, Egregious dry hopped sour ale and Wise Guise raspberry sour ale.

Sierra Nevada Vintage Beer Night
Grape and Grain in San Mateo will dig into its cellar for some vintage Sierra Nevada beers, including 2012 Barrel Aged Bigfoot, 2012 Barrel Aged Ovila Dubbel, 2012 and 2013 Narhwal, 2013 and 2014 Bigfoot, Double-Headed Ruthless and, of course, Pale Ale.

Midnight Sun Tap Takeover

Roots of XVII Anniversary with Matt Brynildson
Firestone Walker returns to Harry’s Hofbrau with the roots of its annual anniversary beer. All of the components of Anniversary XVII will be available on draft: Stickee Monkey, Parabola, Helldorado, and several other rare beers. As part of the event, Head Brewer Matt Brynildson will hold a seminar covering F/W’s barrel aging program and the blending of XVII, followed by Q&A. Seminar limited to the first 150 people. Live music, information and fun. Beers go on at 6 p.m. and the seminar starts at 7 p.m.
