Sexual harrassment alleged: Oak Brook religious leader Bill Gothard resigns

Bill Gothard, the founder and president of the Institute for Basic Life Principles, has resigned, according to a Friday evening report from the Sun-Times, due to alleged acts of sexual harassment of women and teen girls. The Institute for Basic Life Principles is a controversial Oak Brook, Illinois-based organization of religion and home schooling. It reportedly has had seminars which have been witnessed by millions of persons.

Gothard’s resignation follows a period of him being involved with an administrative leave while the board of the organization reviewed the allegations it received. The board has now stated that it will be appointing “interim leadership.”

Gothard has asserted in his teachings that Christian and secular rock music are the antithesis of what God desires in the life of a Christian. He also believes that unmarried children should live with their parents – and obey them.

Though Gothard has been subjected to dozens of women’s complaints of sexual misconduct by him, he has not being charged with any crime, according to Kari Underwood, the co-founder of the site.

The organization reportedly was accused of a sex scandal years ago, as well. Previous Sun-Times reports stated that Gothard’s brother Steve Gothard resigned as an administrative director of the Institute in Basic Youth Conflicts – the name of the organization in the 19980s. Steve Gothard allegedly had affairs with several secretaries of the organization.

The current organization is massive with operations in seven states as well as 11 countries across the globe.
