A sexist gorilla is getting shipped to a new home as the Dallas Zoo has tried its best over the past 18 years to get the primate integrated with the other gorillas at the zoo. The problem with Patrick, the 400lb sexist gorilla is that he was raised around humans, so other gorillas are of no interest to him, according to Fox News on Sept. 25.
The staff love Patrick and he gets along with his human trainers just fine. This intelligent and friendly primate changes when you put him in with his own kind. He either snubs them, or as with one incident with the lady gorillas, he nipped at them to show domination. That’s not what the staff was hoping Patrick would do with some new lady friends.
While it may seem cruel to take Patrick away from his home for the past 18 years, the Dallas Zoo doesn’t have the capacity to keep Patrick in a habitat of his own. When he is moved to Riverbanks Zoo in South Carolina, he will get his own space.
The zoo in South Carolina will work with Patrick a little bit more to try to socialize him. Patrick was abandoned by his mother when he was born at the Bronx Zoo back in 1990. He was raised by humans until he was five, so apes were not part of his life in those formative years.
He actually goes crazy when he’s in a cage with lady gorillas, he bit one and sneered at another. While it was his way of showing who dominates the space they were in at the time, it still wasn’t a picnic for the lady gorillas. The ladies of this primate set become so traumatized by Patrick’s behavior that they wouldn’t eat for a while. Everyone involved has come to the conclusion that Patrick is not a lady’s man.
