1994 Sara Kruzan was 16 years old and sentenced to life in prison for fatally shooting her pimp G.G. In 1994 there were no Human Trafficking laws in the state of California where the case was tried. Sara now 32 is asking for clemency. Her pimp G.G. started to groom Sara at the age of 11. Two years later G.G. raped her and sent her on the streets to work. Three years later Sara shot him.
From age 13-16 Sara was forced into prostitution, working 12 hours a night seven days a week for G.G.'s. Three years later Sara could not stand the lifestyle anymore and shot G.G. Sara was arrested and tried for murder then sentenced to life in Prison.
Human Trafficking did not become a crime until 2000. Their are over 100,000 sex slaves in America today. 90% of those victims will never be found. There life expectency is 7 years due to STD's, drugs and violent crimes against them. Human Trafficking was completely unknow in 1994. You could say that it did not exist. Now there is a public awareness to the crime of Human Trafficking.
What does this mean for victims of Human Trafficking before the crime became a crime? For Sara it means life in prison, for a girl that was raped and forced into prostitution. Sara has asked Gov. Schwarzenegger for clemency but as of now she has heard nothing about her release.
Abolistionist are standing behind her in hopes that the past nightmare and the future can change for Sara. There is a website called "Free Child Sex Trafficking victim Sara Kruzan" http://www.freesarakruzan.org/apps/links/ where they provide links to sites that have petitions to sign to expedite her release.
If you can make right a wrong one should always try.
