Sex lies and business sounds like a possible title for a new reality television show doesn't it? Sex, lies and business, causes a lot of drama in the business world resulting in more companies implementing and enforcing no fraternization policies. Many won't talk about it because it conflicts with our “professional image” but to keep you from getting caught up in sex, lies and business, I'm here to put it all on the table.
The more I do business the more I question how many people actually want to do business. The businesswoman who believes her flirtatious vibes will seduce the money out of a client’s pockets only to have her tactics backfired and instead of getting paid her worth in money that could go back into her business she gets paid in penis and she never seems to understand why she can't get loyal customers, build a reputable name, or grow her business. Then, you have the businessman who talks a good game but his eyes and attention are on your frame instead of your business proposal. He'll talk big numbers, big deals and fancy cars to impress you, yet he never seems to put his money where his mouth is. Instead of getting down to the business at hand and working out a deal, he wants to work you out of your dress and get into your “business”.
Business people who aren't serious about their business will expect you to take sexual favors as payments or discounts for the business you offer, yet, they seek to generate and maximize their own business profits at your expense. Both the man and the woman in these situations are pitching you their business ideas that will sound more like get rich quick schemes instead of calculated investments that will create longevity for their businesses. When you do business you're going to run into a lot of people, some are going to be very attractive, intelligent, and charming but if you want to do business successfully you have to look at the bigger picture and keep your head in the game.
I know there are some of us who say we can have sex with no strings attached but even the strongest will fall weak when they meet their match. You might be able to do the no attachment thing but you never know how the other person is going to take it and your business name and reputation are not worth the risk. In a town as small as Harrisburg Pa, it’s not difficult to recognize those who really want to do business and those who just want to pussyfoot around. Yes it’s great to get compliments and be showered with adulation and flattery but don't let a little sweet talk blind you from the fact that you came to do a job and get paid for that job before anything else.
Yes, they may look good, speak well, and smell great but if you want the smell of sweet success you have to keep your priorities straight. Remain professional and keep your private life private, because of course people will talk, assume, and speculate, but you don't have time to be bothered by people who are not about the business of doing business. Always remember, they only know what somebody else told them and when you're running your business your focus should be on your business. Never mix business with pleasure; not all professionals can handle a breakup as maturely as we or they would like to believe. I can't stress enough the importance of being patient; keeping your eyes and ears open. This awareness will allow you to spot the messy people from the clean people, the amateurs from the professionals, and sex and lies from the business.
