Have you looked at the prices of dog clothing lately? It's very expensive and while cute, cheaply made. So what's a loving pooch owner to do? How about making your own? There are many patterns in the popular pattern books such as McCall's, Butterick, and Simplicity but if you search, you can find free patterns online many with tutorials.

The first site is Sewing Support which includes 107 of the best free dog clothes patterns and tutorials. Styles run the gamut from dog coats, jackets, sweaters, shirts, booties, costumes, and dresses and are taken from all over the web. You can use your fabric stash but also an old sweatshirt or t-shirt that you want to recycle. Do you dream of seeing your Yorkie in a tu-tu? This site has a pattern. Or how about a tie, collar, or bandana? Those patterns can be found here. How about a hoodie? Or a winter scarf and hat set? So many cute patterns to pick from.

There are also books filled with patterns such as Canine Couture Dog Coats and Canine Couture: 25 Projects. Or, Sew Dog: Easy Sew Dogwear and Custom Gear for Home and Travel. Picture your sweetie in a coat that matches his travel bag and bed. If you are a beginning sewer, check out Dogwear: Over 30 Easy Super Easy Sewing Projects. These patterns are simple with only a few pieces but will get you started on a new wardrobe for Fido!

The Sewing Support site also discusses techniques and fabric choices as well as discussion about laundering fabric and clothing. There is a Learn to Sew section too so beginners should have no worries. This site is great and includes everything you need to build that stylish wardrobe that could cost plenty at the pet store!

Another source for doggie ideas is Pinterest, which also includes patterns and tutorials. One pin shows you how to make your own doggie coat pattern using a brown paper grocery bag and another shows how to measure your pet for a perfect fit. Another great pin is for dog booties, which are essential for bad or hot weather. There's even a little dog harness tutorial, displayed on the cutest Yorkie and a dog bed that you can make out of your old recycled sweaters.

So, go ahead and sew! Your baby will be stylish and warm this winter and you will be the proud mama, or papa, as you walk him or her down the street!
